Region 3 Meeting - Open to All ASAH Members
Featuring a presentation by Dr. Michael Selbst, Ph.D., BCBA-D, LBA
Title: Compassionate Approaches to PDA and Other Challenging Behaviors
Dr. Michael Selbst, Ph.D., BCBA-D, LBA (Executive Director of Behavior Therapy Associates) will explore the complexities of significant challenging behavior, including Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), a behavioral profile most often associated with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Although PDA is not yet a recognized ASD subtype in the U.S., it is characterized by extreme resistance to everyday demands and requests, often linked to heightened anxiety and a strong need for control. PDA and some other behavior profiles can significantly impact daily functioning and may not respond to conventional intervention approaches. This webinar will highlight compassionate, evidence-based strategies that foster flexibility, social awareness, empathy, and adaptive skills to promote greater independence and emotional regulation. Dr. Selbst will share practical tools and approaches educators can use to more effectively and compassionately support and engage students with PDA and other significant behavioral challenges across settings.
