Position Summary:

Durand is seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant – Payroll to join our Finance team. This position is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of biweekly payroll and related accounting functions. The Staff Accountant – Payroll will work closely with Finance, Human Resources, and department leadership to ensure payroll accuracy, proper financial reporting, and compliance with organizational policies and applicable requirements.

The position will also support general accounting functions, including account reconciliations, journal entries, month-end close, audit preparation, and financial analysis.

Qualifications:             

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
  • 3–5 years of accounting and payroll experience; nonprofit experience preferred.
  • Experience processing payroll for a mid-sized or large organization preferred.
  • Experience with employee benefits administration, including benefit deductions and related reconciliations, preferred.
  • Experience with Paycom or another payroll/HRIS platform required.
  • Experience with NetSuite or another ERP system is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of general accounting principles, account reconciliations, and payroll-related accounting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including experience working with large data sets and reconciliations.
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize responsibilities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and identify and resolve discrepancies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with all levels and diverse groups both within and outside the agency.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Must possess the ability to maintain confidentiality regarding all agency information, both internal and external.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Process biweekly payroll accurately and on a timely basis for approximately 300 plus employees.
  • Review timesheets, payroll changes, department allocations, overtime, deductions, paid time off, and payroll exceptions for accuracy.
  • Review payroll registers and supporting reports and resolve discrepancies prior to payroll submission.
  • Process payroll adjustments, corrections, retroactive payments, and other payroll transactions as needed.
  • Prepare payroll journal entries and reconcile payroll-related general ledger and balance sheet accounts.
  • Reconcile payroll taxes, benefit deductions, garnishments, third party sick pay and other payroll liabilities.
  • Assist with quarterly and year-end payroll processes and reconciliations.
  • Prepare bank and general ledger account reconciliations as assigned.
  • Prepare and post recurring and adjusting journal entries.
  • Participate in monthly and year-end close processes.
  • Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for the annual audit and regulatory reviews.
  • Prepare payroll and labor-related reports and analysis as requested.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records, procedures, and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with the implementation and ongoing use of financial systems, including NetSuite and Paycom.
  • Identify opportunities to improve and automate payroll and accounting processes.
  • Provide backup support to other Finance functions as needed.
  • Perform other accounting and Finance duties as assigned.
