Reading Specialist
Summary
The reading specialist supports comma supplements and extends classroom teaching and works collaboratively to implement a quality reading program that is research-based data driven and meets the individual needs of students.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide direct reading instruction to small groups and individual students based on their specific needs.
- Assess students reading abilities and implement appropriate intervention strategies.
- Work closely with teachers, therapists, and paraprofessionals to integrate literacy strategies into the curriculum.
- Support students through in classroom instruction and individualized literacy sessions.
- Develop and lead professional development sessions on best practices and reading instruction.
- Work as part of a team to evaluate and recommend reading programs to be implemented school wide.
- Monitor student progress, adjust instructional approaches as needed, and document interventions.
- Collaborate with classroom staff to implement evidence based literacy strategies tailored to students with special needs.
- Communicate with parents, providing recommendations and strategies to support their child's reading development at home.
- Attend and participate in IEP meetings providing appropriate input.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Valid NJ DOE Reading Specialist Certification (required)
- Experience working with students with special needs is preferred.
- Chronology of literacy intervention strategies and differentiated instruction.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively engage with parents and staff.
- Passionate about improving literacy skills and fostering love for reading and students.
